Episode 39 - Discovering Spiritual Authority - with Amaryah Cannon

Leaving church for 5 years fixed everything and nothing at the same time

We hear a lot of people talk about their experience leaving religion altogether, but not as many who discuss the experience of leaving and returning.

This conversation explores the complexities of faith transitions, particularly within the context of the LDS Church. Amaryah shares her journey from growing up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to being a Relief Society president (a church position overseeing all adult women), to leaving and exploring various faith communities, including the Community of Christ (the largest offshoot of the mainstream LDS church).

We delve into the challenges of navigating personal faith crises, the dynamics of family involvement in faith exploration, and the importance of teaching children about diverse beliefs. The conversation also touches on the stages of faith development and the frustrating non-linear nature of spiritual journeys.

Amaryah shares much about her journey of faith, including some of the complexities of leaving the Community of Christ and the LDS Church. We discuss the importance of personal agency, the challenges of navigating church communities, and the need for authenticity in one's spiritual journey.

Come along with us as she shares with us the real reason she returned to “the fold.”
